History

The History of Avondale What started as rural farmland in the early 1800s, subdivided in the mid-19th century for wealthy Protestant and merchant families, became a village incorporated in 1864 and annexed to Cincinnati in 1896. Affluent German-Jewish residents built grand estates in the early 1900s, followed by Black families fleeing West End displacement in the 1940s amid blockbusting and urban renewal. North Avondale preserved its leafy charm, while the whole neighborhood anchors Uptown's heartbeat as Cincinnati's second-oldest Black community. Today it remains the vibrant, welcoming spot where your family’s joyful moments unfold. Come roar with the lions at the Zoo and feel the heartbeat for yourself.
